Set at the turn of the century in Portland, Oregon, this novel tells the story of Charlotte Bridger Drummond, a strong and independent pioneer woman of the West. As the single parent of 5 young boys she has turned to writing popular novels about adventurous women in order to support her family. When the grandchild of her housekeeper gets lost in the forest, she joins the search and travels deep into the wilderness at the border between Oregon and Washington. She becomes lost herself and stumbles upon a mysterious community of magical, elusive, Sasquatch-like creatures.
